August 2010 Tennis Tidbits

*The NCHSTCA released its 2-A women's tennis preseason state rankings on Sunday, August 15th, and the Greene Central Lady Rams are ranked #5 in the state in the preseason poll.

*The Greene Central varsity women's tennis team will play Salisbury High School in the opening round of the Twin Cities Invitational High School Tournament at Hanes Park in Winston-Salem at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27th.    Salisbury and Greene Central played for the 2-A state championship in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009.


*The GCTA would like to thank Geneva Colie, Selena Sutton, Hunter Thigpen, Lori Thigpen, and Victoria Grant for volunteering at the Snow Hill Summer Junior USTA Tournament on Sunday, August 29th.


*The GCTA would like to thank Carol Taylor, Martha Welch, Dawn Murphy, Quentin Thigpen, Alex Gilbert, Kathy Gilbert, Stephanie Hardy, Anna Carpenter, and Lori Thigpen for volunteering at the Snow Hill Summer Junior USTA Tournament on Saturday, August 28th.


*The Greene County Middle School girls' tennis team will hold its first practice on Wednesday, August 25th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex.   Terin Carraway will be returning for her second year as the head coach.

*August Quad will be held on August 9, 16, 12, and 30.   Play will begin at 6:30 each night.  Email Coach Clark at DClark2212@gmail.com if you would like to be placed on the sub list.


*The Greene Central junior varsity women's tennis team, coached by Jean Brendel, will open its 2010 season at home on August 25th against Cardinal Gibbons.


*Sophomore Jessica Hatch posted the best mile time at varsity women's tennis practice on Monday, August 23rd at 10:06, just two seconds ahead of eighth grader Chasity Holloman.


*Junior Hayes Lovett and sophomore Kayla Radford won third set tiebreaks in singles on Tuesday, August 17th to lead the undefeated Greene Central Lady Rams to a 6-3 victory at Greenfield School.


*The GCTA would like to thank Brycen Radford, Lisa May, Shelia Carraway, Selena Sutton, Jay Carraway, Norma Lovett, Jennifer Radford, and Geneva Colie for volunteering at the Greene Central Women's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #4 on Saturday, August 14th.


*The Greene Central varsity women's tennis team will open its 2010 season on Monday, August 16th at traditional 3-A powerhouse Wilson Fike at 3:30 p.m.

*The varsity women's tennis team would like to thank Jay and Shelia Carraway for the cold watermelon at Super Scrimmage Extravanganza #4 on Saturday, August 14th.

*The GCTA would like to thank Caitlin Deans, Lindsey Holloman, Brittany Colie, Robert Deans, Harrison Welch, and Geneva Colie for volunteering at the Greene Central Women's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #3 on Friday, August 13th.

*The GCTA would like to thank Martha Welch, Katie Jones, Emily Sugg, Harrison Welch, and Geneva Colie for volunteering at the Greene Central Women's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #2 on Thursday, August 12th.

*The GCTA would like to thank Linwood and Sudie Radford for the landscaping work around the fieldhouse this week.   It really looks great!

*The annual Greene Central High School Fall Sportsmanship Meeting will be held on Thursday, August 12th at 6:00 at the high school cafeteria.  All women's tennis players are required to attend along with a parent or guardian.

*The Greene Central High School junior varsity women's tennis team will hold its first practice on Monday, August 16th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex.   Jean Brendel will be returning for her second year as the head coach.

*The GCTA would like to thank Harrison Welch, Chasity Holloman, Martha Welch, and Geneva Colie for volunteering at the Greene Central Women's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #1 on Friday, August 6th.

*Sophomore Jessica Hatch turned in the the best mile time of the season at the fourth varsity women's tennis practice on Thursday, August 5th at 10:55, barely outdistancing our beloved manager Sam "Lightning" Overby by 14 seconds.  

*Sophomores Jessica Hatch and Kayla Radford battled for over 90 minutes in the longest challenge match for the Greene Central varsity on Wednesday, August 4th before Hatch prevailed 5-4(3).
