January 2014 Tennis Tidbits

*George Holding of Raleigh was elected to the United States House of Representatives in November and was officially sworn in this week.   He is the father of Louisa, Alice, and Beatrice Holding who play in our USTA tournaments frequently. 

*The Greene Central Lady Rams will open the 2013 season at Barton College in the opening round of the first annual Wilson Daily Times Classic Tournament.

*Bobby Taylor has been named the 2013 Eastern Plains Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year

*Former Lady Ram Holly Mace Patty welcomed her second child, Jason Paige Patty, into the world on Monday, May 20th.   Mace was a starter on the 2003 and 2004 teams that reached the state finals.    She is married to Greene Central graduate Jason Patty.

*Jessica Gray, a former Lady Ram and 2010 graduate of Greene Central High School, will graduate from Nursing School at East Carolina University on Friday, December 13th!

*Christopher Hardy, a starter on Greene Central's 2005 state finalist team as a senior, has just earned his doctoral degree in Chemistry at the University of South Carolina.  Congratulations Dr. Hardy!

*Mackenzie Mixon, a former member of the Greene County Middle School team, earned All-Region honors as a sophomore at #2 singles on the Riverside-Martin High School varsity women's tennis team this fall.

*Lorie Harrell, class of 2000 and a former regional doubles champion for the Lady Rams, married Jimmy Ingram in Kinston on Sunday, January 19th!

*Greene Central senior number one Taylar Keel has decided to attend Barton College next year!

*The GCTA has voted to meet on the second Tuesday of each month in 2014.   Members are always welcome to attend.

*Former Lady Ram Melissa Beddard Eakes gave birth to her first child, Grayson Guy Eakes, at 6:11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 14th!

*Elizabeth Cooper, a starter on Greene Central's 2005 state championship team, married Gary Hamm at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Kinston on Saturday, March 1st.

*Elizabeth McLawhorn, a starter on Greene Central's 2007 state championship team, has been accepted into the Physician's Assistant School at East Carolina University!

*Former Ram Banks Nimmo has just accepted a position with the Tarboro Fire Department!

*Abbey Dail, a starter on Greene Central's 2008 and 2009 varsity teams, has been accepted into the Master of Business Administration programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and East Carolina University!

*March 9th is Johnny Rouse's birthday!    He played #2 singles on Greene Central's 1988 men's team as a senior. 

*March 17th is Ken Morgan's birthday!   "Pete" Morgan started on the1997, 1997, 1998, and 1999 Greene Central men's tennis teams!

*Former Ram Chris Heath has been accepted into the nursing program at Pitt Community Community College.


*Senior Robby Taylor won the 2014 Greene Central High School Jim Rouse Award.

*The GCTA will be hosting the 2014 Downeast Junior Team Tennis 18 and Under Intermediate League Singles Jamboree on Monday, July 14th.   Play begins at 9:00 a.m.
