January/February 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Macy Murphy played in her first USTA tennis tournament this weekend, the Greene County Doubles Only Tournament at the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex.

*The GCTA would like to thank Sam Overby volunteering at the Greene County Doubles Only Tournament on Sunday, February 13th!


*The GCTA would like to thank Lindsey Holloman, Jennifer Radford, Kayla Radford, Ken Radford, and Jessica Hatch for volunteering at the Greene County Doubles Only Tournament on Saturday, February 12th!


*The GCTA would like to welcome its newest tennis player, Shelley Jones.

 *The Greene County Tennis Association will be hosting the 12th annual Men's Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #2 on Saturday, February 19th at 9:00 a.m.   The eight teams entered include Newton-Conover, Tarboro, Wilmington New Hanover, Eastern Wayne, Charles B. Aycock, Topsail, Northern Nash, and Southern Nash.    New Hanover is expected to be ranked in the top five in the state in 4-A this year.

*The GCTA would like to thank Martha Welch, Geneva Colie, and Lori Thigpen for volunteering in the concession stand at the Greene Central Men's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #1 on Friday, February 18th!

*The GCTA would like to welcome another new tennis player, Peyton Beaman!

*The GCTA would like to thank Carol Taylor, Sam Overby, Janet Overby, and Bud Overby for volunteering at the Greene Central High School Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #3 on Friday, February 25th!

*The GCTA would like to welcome another new tennis player, Garrett Walston.

*The GCTA would like to welcome our newest tennis player, Jacob Potter.

*The GCTA would like to thank Harrison Welch, Martha Welch, Lori Thigpen, and Geneva Colie for volunteering in the concession stand at the Greene Central Men's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #2 on Saturday, February 19th!

 *Greenville has been awarded the 2011 and 2012 North Carolina Junior Team Tennis State Championships.   Chris Hinson and the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2011 event July 15-17.

*Sophomore Brittany Colie and senior Lauren Carraway led the Greene Central Lady Rams in singles wins this season.   Both finished the season with 20-7 records.

*Freshman Robbie Taylor won all three of his singles matches in his first week as a starter on the Greene Central varsity men's tennis team.

*The GCTA would like to thank Lindsey Holloman for volunteering at Quick Start on Thursday, March 3rd!


*The GCTA would like to welcome more new tennis players, Bynum Walston and Karis Douglas.

*We'll be starting our next Quick Start Clinic on Thursday, March 3rd.  Please help us spread the word in the community.   Brittany Colie will be conducting the clinic, but we'll need lots of volunteers for this free clinic!

*The GCTA would like to welcome its newest tennis player, Caroline Radford.


*The GCTA would like to thank Hayes Lovett, Alex Deans, Starr Britt, Morgan Britt, Kayla Radford, Robert Deans, Daniel Deans, Lindsey Holloman, Caitlin Deans, Quentin Thigpen, Harrison Welch, Martha Welch, Lori Thigpen, and Hinson Britt for volunteering at the Greene Central Men's Tennis Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #4 on Saturday, February 26th!

*Zach Marks, a 2003 graduate of Southern Nash High School, played in our super scrimmages during his high school career.   He was back in Snow Hill at the super scrimmages this weekend as the head coach of the Northern Nash High School men's tennis team.

*Three members of the class of 1997 (Blake Evans, Melissa Casper, and Amanda Clemmons) are expecting babies.    The class of 1997 made up the bulk of the 1994 squad that produced the first conference championship and first winning season in women's tennis in Greene Central High School history.

*Junior Brittany Colie won the most games on the number one quad on Monday, March 14th!

*The GCTA would like to welcome Laura Rohrbach, our newest tennis player.


*The GCTA would like to thank Morgan Britt for volunteering at Quick Start on Thursday, March 17th!

*The GCTA would like to welcome two more new tennis players, Jamie Brooks and Savannah Brooks.
