April 2012 Tennis Tidbits

*Cally Hudson, a starter on the Lady Rams' 2007 state championship squad, is finishing her junior year at Wake Forest University.  Hudson is double-majoring in Psychology and Exercise/Health Science.

*The GCTA would like to welcome its newest tennis player, Lori Thigpen!

*The GCTA will be holding a Work Night on Monday, April 23rd from 5:30-7:00 to get ready for the Eastern Plains Conference on Tuesday.  Please come out and help if you can!


*The Greene Central and Tarboro varsity men's tennis teams finished as co-champions of the Eastern Plains Conference.   A playoff match will be held at Greene Central at 4:00 on Wednesday, April 25th to determine the #1 berth from the league in the state playoffs.  Both teams finished the season 9-1 in league play and 10-6 overall!

*The GCTA would like to welcome its newest tennis player, Breanna West!

*Senior Layne Carraway has won the UNC Scholars Award, a $9000 scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

*Senior Brittany Colie has won the Golden Leaf Scholarship!

*Senior Danielle Dillane has won the North Carolina State Fireman's Association Scholarship!

*Sophomore Daniel Deans has been accepted to attend the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics next year!


*Christy Murphy, a starter on Greene Central's 2005 state championship squad, will be marrying Shea Colby Johnson on Saturday, May 12th at Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church.   Murphy is a teacher at Snow Hill Primary School.

*Amy Ivey, a starter on Greene Central's 2000 state finalist women's team and one of two tennis players to win the prestigious Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been elected president of the North Carolina School Psychology Association.   Ivey is currently working as a school psychologist in Wayne County.

*USTA North Carolina President Kelly Gaines, who also coached at North Carolina State University, was at Greene Central High School for a meeting on Thursday, April 5th to start an after-school program involving Quick Start Tennis.

*The Greene Central varsity men's tennis team lost 6-3 in the opening round of the dual team playoffs on Wednesday, May 2nd at Edenton Holmes.   The Rams finished as co-champions of the Eastern Plains Conference, going 9-1 in league play and 10-7 overall!

*The GCTA would like to welcome its newest tennis player, Martha Welch!

*Dustin Grant, a starter on Greene Central's 2005 state finalist men's tennis team, graduated from Pharmacy School at Wingate University on Saturday, May 12th!
