July 2012 Tennis Tidbits

*Danielle Dillane will be traveling to Orlando, Florida this week to compete in the Health Occupation Students of America national competition!

*Billy Strother has resigned as the men's and women's tennis coach at Tarboro High School to become the new athletic director at C.B. Martin Middle School.

*The GCTA would like to welcome its two newest tennis players, Kim Howell and Carson Howell.

*Two of our newest players had a "war"on the final night of the June Singles League on Monday, June 25th (two hours and 22 games).    GCTA president Lori Thigpen prevailed over treasurer Geneva Colie 6-4, 7-5!   Congratulations to both on a well-played match! 

*The GCTA will be offering a Mixed Doubles League in July.  Play will be held on Mondays at 6:30 (July 9, 16, and 23).  The deadline for entry is Thursday, July 5th at 9:00 p.m.  Email DClark2212@gmail.com to enter!


*Dr. Brent Darden has passed his pharmacy exam and is now working with the Kerr Drug company!  Darden was a state doubles champion at Greene Central in 2005.

*Senior Olivia Jackson will be attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill June 24th through July 3rd!

*Freshman Chasity Holloman won the 2011 GCTA Sportsmanship Award for the varsity women's tennis team.

*Sophomore Daniel Deans is serving as a page with the North Carolina Senate this week!

*Senior Layne Carraway just returned from a week in London with a group from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

*Lindsey Holloman won the 2011 GCTA Sportsmanship Award for the middle school women's tennis team.

*Senior Harrison Welch will be the lead instructor for the GCTA Quick Start Clinic in July!

*Senior Alex Deans has earned the National AP Scholar Award for his high school performance on AP exams!

*Sarah Beth Carraway,  a starter on the 2006 Lady Rams' team, will be the new boys' tennis coach at Greene County Middle School.   Carraway will be teaching second grade at West Greene. 

*Former star Casey Kearney, who played number one singles on Greene Central's first state finalist team in 1998, welcomed her second child into the world this morning, Adam Broughton Beaman!

*Senior Alex Deans won the GCTA Sportsmanship Award for the 2012 Greene Central High School varsity men's tennis team!

*Sophomore Emily Sugg was named the Most Improved Player on the 2012 Greene Central High School junior varsity women's tennis team!

*Former Greene Central star Allison Cobb Atkins is the new varsity women's tennis coach at Farmville Central High School.

*McKenzie Mixon won her first varsity singles and doubles matches for Riverside-Martin High School this week.

*Summer Chase, a starter on Greene Central's 2003 and 2004 state finalist squads, is the new junior varsity women's tennis coach at Charles B. Aycock High School.  Chase will be teaching History af the school.

*Meredith Ann Rouse, the #1 player on Greene Central's 2005 2-A state championship squad, married Justin Russell Wilkes on Saturday, July 14th at Friendship Free Will Baptist Church.   Rouse now works with the State Employees Credit Union in Snow Hill.

*The Greene Central junior varsity women's tennis team will begin practice on Monday, August 13th at 6:00 p.m.   All players must have a physical before beginning practice.

*Former GC star Julie Harper will be coaching the Greene Central junior varsity women's tennis team this fall.   Harper started on the 1998 team that went to the 2-A state finals and played four years at Barton College.

*Jean Brendel has resigned as the junior varsity women's tennis coach at Greene Central.   The GCTA would like to thank Coach Brendel for her many years of service to the tennis program at the school!


*Junior Olivia Jackson won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2011 Greene Central High School junior varsity women's tennis team!

*Senior Alex Deans received the 2012 State Employees Credit Union Scholarship on Wednesday, June 6th at Greene Central High School's Senior Awards Night.    The scholarship is valued at $10,000 for four years.

*The front courts (1-6) at the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex will be closed on Saturday and Sunday (November 10-11) due to the painting of new Quick Start lines.   The back courts will be available for open play throughout the weekend.  The front courts will be available again for play on Monday!

*The GCTA will be giving $3467 in scholarship money to its five senior members at the annual Greene Central High School Senior Awards Night on Wednesday, June 6th.

*Senior Layne Carraway won Greene Central's Outstanding History Student Award for the 2011-2012 school year!

*Sophomore Robby Taylor was ranked #109 in the state in boys' 14's singles by the North Carolina Tennis Association in 2011.

*The Greene Central varsity women's tennis team will open play in the Port City Invitational on Friday, August 17th at 4:30 against Wilmington Hoggard at Empie Park in Wilmington.

*The GCTA will be continuing its spring 2012 Quick Start clinics on Tuesday, June 19.   The clinic for ages 4-6 will be held from 6:15-6:55, and the clinic for ages 7-10 will held from 7:00-7:45.   Hunter Thigpen will be teaching the clinic.
