March 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*The Greene County Tennis Association will be hosting a tournament on Saturday, April 9th for the Greene County Relay for Life.  This will be a 16-team compass draw mixed doubles tournament with all teams guaranteed four matches.   Play will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 1:30.   Pro-8 sets will be played.    The first 16 teams to enter will be included.  Stay tuned to this site for more information or contact Starr Britt!

*March Quad continues on Monday, March 28th at 6:30.   All 24 spots in the quad have been taken, but we always need subs.  If you would like to have your name added to the sub list, please email Coach Clark at DClark2212@gmail.com.

*The GCTA would like to welcome Matthew Hardison, our newest tennis player!

*Don't complain about the strings in your racquet!  Wade Walston is playing with strings that were put in his racquet in 1987!


*The GCTA would like to thank Lindsey Holloman for volunteering in the concession stand for home tennis matches on Monday and Tuesday (March 21 and 22)!

*The GCTA would like to thank Janet Overby for volunteering in the concession stand at the Snow Hill Spring Junior Open on Sunday, April 3rd!


*The GCTA would like to thank Harrison Welch and Brittany Colie for playing in the Snow Hill Spring Junior Open Tournament this weekend.

*The GCTA would like to thank Starr Britt and Lori Thigpen for helping to put together an outstanding Tennis for Life event on Saturday, April 9th.  We'd also like to thank all of our fabulous volunteers and the players who participated!

*Greene County's version of "Family Feud" will take place at the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex on Monday, April 11th at 6:30 p.m. when Brittany Colie squares off against her dad in the Spring Singles League.   The younger Colie has promised to show no mercy!

*The GCTA would like to welcome our newest tennis player, Austin Overstreet.


*The Greene Central varsity women will be in Raleigh to play Cardinal Gibbons, last year's 2-A state finalists, on Thursday, August 24th, 2011.

*Monday's middle school boys' match with Elm City has been cancelled.   The team will not practice this week or next week.

*Congratulations to Sam Overby, Alex Gilbert, and Josh Recore for advancing to the semifinals of the Eastern Plains Conference Exhibition King Touranment.   The semifinals will be played on Friday, May 6th!


*The GCTA would like to welcome new tennis players Angelia Harrison, Aubrey Simmons, Briana Stallings, and Kayla Stallings.

*David Murray, a star of the men's teams at Greene Central in 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992 will be tying the knot on Saturday, April 23rd with Emily Jo Herring.

*One of the county's top high school tennis fans, Mrs. Kathy Perry, passed away on Wednesday, April 20th.   Her twins Casey and Jason both played for the Greene Central varsity teams.   She was a special lady and will be missed.  Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at Wilkinson's Funeral Home in Greenville.   The family is asking for donations to the Walstonburg Fire Department in lieu of flowers.


*Former GCHS star Summer Chase has been accepted into the MAT program at East Carolina University.    Chase is currently coaching the junior varsity tennis teams at Arendell Parrott Academy.

*Samantha Taylor, a 2010 Greene Central graduate, was back at the high school to perform with the Appalachian State University Gospel Choir on Thursday, April 21st.   The group's "Hymns for Healing" program donated all proceeds to the Greene County students and staff affected by recent storm.

*Senior Eric Simmons and freshman Robby Taylor won the Eastern 2-A Regional doubles championship on Saturday, May 10th.   Simmons/Taylor improved to 19-4 overall with their four wins over the weekend.

*The GCTA would like to thank Geneva Colie and Lori Thigpen for volunteering at the Eastern Regional Tournament on Saturday, May 7th!

*Congratulations to Eric Simmons and Robby Taylor for qualifying for the NCHSAA State Individual Tournament at the Cary Tennis Center on May 13-14.

*The GCTA would like to thank Jennifer Radford, Brycen Radford, Janet Overby, Lori Thigpen, Martha Welch, and Geneva Colie for volunteering at the Eastern Regional Tournament on Friday, May 6th!

*The GCTA would like to thank Janet Overby, Lori Thigpen, and Geneva Colie for volunteering at Clean-Up Night on Thursday, May 4th.

*The GCTA would like to thank Ken, Jennifer, and Kayla Radford for putting out new pine straw on our bushes near the road this week!

*The Greene Central varsity boys advanced to the round of 16 in the dual team state playoffs with a 5-4 win over North Johnston here on Tuesday, May 3rd.  The Rams will play host to Croatan in the second round on Tuesday, May 10th!

*The GCTA would like to welcome Bennie and Bonnie Coats as its newest lifetime members.
