June 2011 Tennis Tidbits

*Junior Layne Carraway won the Scholar-Athlete Award at the annual GCHS Awards Day on Friday, May 27th.     This award goes to the varsity athlete with the highest academic average at the school.

*Two of the four 2011 men's tennis state champions, Newton-Conover and Cardinal Gibbons, visited Greene Central High School during the season.

*Jurman Leveston won the 2011 Greene County Tennis Association Middle School Boys' Tennis Sportsmanship Award.

*The 2011 Greene Central varsity women's tennis schedule is now up in the "Schedules" section of our web site.

*Harrison Welch won "Around the World" at general practice on Monday, June 6th!

*The GCTA would like to welcome our newest tennis player, Mary Carson Head.

*Senior Dylan Smith was presented with the Golden Leaf Scholarship at the annual Greene Central High School Senior Awards Night on Wednesday, June 8th.

*Greene County lost a great tennis fan early in the morning on Wednesday, June 8th with the passing of Mrs. Jennifer Harper.   Please keep Randy and Julie in your prayers.

*Eighth grader Mackenzie Butts was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2011 Greene County Middle School girls' tennis team at the annual sports banquet on Thursday, May 26th.


*Freshman Quentin Thigpen won the 2011 Greene County Tennis Association Varsity Men's Tennis Sportsmanship Award.


*The two freshmen honor attendants at Greene Central High School this year were both tennis players, Daniel Deans and Lindsey May.

*Sophomore Harrison Welch won the 2011 Greene County Tennis Association Junior Varsity Men's Tennis Sportsmanship Award.


 *Senior Lauren Carraway was named the Greene Central Outstanding Senior Female Athlete at the annual GCHS Awards Day on Friday, May 27th.  Carraway is the first tennis player since 1990 to win the award.

*Eighth grader Chasity Holloman won the Coach's Award for the 2011 Greene County Middle School girls' tennis team at the annual sports banquet on Thursday, May 26th.

*Senior Ian Whitson is the salutatorian for the Greene Central Class of 2011!


*Eighth grader Chelsea Jones was named Most Improved Player for the 2011 Greene County Middle School girls' tennis team at the annual sports banquet on Thursday, May 26th.

*Brittany Horton, a 2007 Greene Central graduate and a All-State performer for the 2005 Lady Rams' state championship squad, graduated from East Carolina University this year and is already teaching at West Greene Elementary School.

*Carol Taylor won the 2011 Greene County Middle School Pride in Greene Award.


*Eighth grader Chelsey Jones won the 2010 Greene County Tennis Association Middle School Girls' Tennis Sportsmanship Award.


*Tennis players Hayes Lovett, Alex Deans, and Layne Carraway were selected as marshals from this year's junior class.


*The Greene County Tennis Association awarded a total of $3697 in scholarship money to five seniors (Ian Whitson, Lauren Carraway, Dylan Smith, Eric Simmons, and Hunter Thigpen) on Senior Awards Night.

*The GCTA would like to welcome its newest tennis player, Morgan Hill.

*Senior Danielle Dillane, a member of the women's tennis team, is attending Governor's School East at Meredith College this summer.

*The Greene Central varsity women's tennis team, with five starters returning from the 2010 squad that advanced to the 2-A state semifinals, will begin practice on Monday, August 1st at 6:00 p.m.

*Green Hope High School, one of the premier women's tennis programs in the state, will be in Snow Hill for the first time in history on Saturday, August 6th at Super Scrimmage Extravaganza #2.


*The GCTA would like to thank Bud Overby, Janet Overby, Lisa May, Norma Lovett, and Martha Welch for attending the Greene County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, June 20th to support president Lori Thigpen's presentation to the board.


*GCTA president Lori Thigpen made an excellent presentation to the Greene County Board of Commissioners on Monday, June 20th about plans to resurface the courts and upgrade the Greene Central High School Tennis Complex.

*Ashton Walker, a rising freshman at Charles B. Aycock High School and a member of the GCTA 18 and under Intermediate team, is at UNC-Chapel Hill's tennis camp this week.

*Former GCHS star Kelly Bryant, a 2001 graduate, stopped by the Greene Central Tennis Complex for a visit on Thursday night.  Bryant just finished her sixth year as an elementary school teacher in Charlotte.


*The Greene County Tennis Association 14 and Under Beginning League team lost its season opener 3-2 at Walnut Creek Country Club on Wednesday, June 15th.   Jared Hall won in singles.


*The Greene County Tennis Association 18 and Under Intermediate League team lost its season opener 6-3 at East Duplin High School on Tuesday, June 14th.    Katie Gurley, Sam Overby, and Harrison Welch won in singles.

*Senior Josh Recore won the Most Valuable Player Award for the 2011 Greene Central High School junior varsity men's tennis team.

*Senior Eric Simmons and freshman Robbie Taylor won Most Valuable Player awards for the 2011 Greene Central High School varsity men's tennis team.

*Senior Lauren Carraway was a recipient of the 2011 North Carolina Nursing Scholarship at the annual Greene Central High School Senior Awards Night on Wednesday, June 8th.

*Junior Harrison Welch won "Around the World" at practice on Wednesday and Thursday night!

*The GCTA would like to welcome two new tennis players, Alec Merritt and Ryan Hall.


*Seniors Alex Deans and Layne Carraway are attending Governor's School West at Salem College this summer.


*Lake Wilson defeated the GCTA 18 and under Intermediate team 6-3 here on Thursday, June 30th.   Lindsey May and Sam Overby won in singles for the locals.


*Walnut Creek defeated the GCTA 14 and under Beginning team 3-2 here on Monday, June 27th.   Jared Hall won in singles and later teamed up with Nailah Ortega for a victory in doubles.

*The GCTA would like to thank Anna Scott Radford, Kayla Radford, Jennifer Radford, and Lori Thigpen for volunteering at the Greene County Summer Sizzle USTA Tournament on Sunday, June 26th.

*The GCTA would like to thank Martha Welch, Harrison Welch, Geneva Colie, Jennifer Radford, Janet Overby, Bonnie Coats, Lori Thigpen, Lisa May, and Brycen Radford for volunteering at the Greene County Summer Sizzle USTA Tournament on Saturday, June 25th.

*The GCTA will be hosting a July Mixed Doubles League.  Matches will be played on July 11, 18, and 25.   The deadline to register is Thursday, July 7th at 9:00 p.m.    Matches will begin at 6:30 p.m.    For more information or to enter, email Coach Clark.   We will try to find you a partner if you need help with that, but please give us some advance notice.

*The GCTA would like to thank Martha Welch, Geneva Colie, Jennifer Radford, Selena Sutton, Teresa Griffin, Ryan Griffin, Harrison Welch, and Lori Thigpen for volunteering at the Greene Central Summer Classic on Saturday, July 16th!

*Daniel and Caitlin Deans spent this week at the Charlotte Latin High School Summer Tennis Camp and had the opportunity to work with "Dr. Dirt," the alias of former Wimbledon star Tim Wilkison.  

*The GCTA 18 and Under Intermediate team won 5-4 at Courtside Athletic Club on Wednesday, July 13th.    Harrison Welch and Sam Overby won in singles and doubles.

*The GCTA would like to thank Martha Welch, Geneva Colie, Madison Holloman, Bonnie Coats, Charles Coats, Susan Holloman, Lisa May, Lori Thigpen, Quentin Thigpen, Ken Radford, and Jennifer Radford for volunteering in the concession stand at the Downeast Junior Team Tennis 18 and Under Intermediate League Jamboree on Monday, July 18th.

*The GCTA 14 and Under Beginning League team won its final match of the season at Walnut Creek Country Club on Monday, July 18th.   Brycen Radford won in singles.
